Out and About
Start with the Painswick Rococo Garden, the UK’s only surviving example of an 18th-century Rococo garden. Wander through whimsical follies, the enchanting maze, and the peaceful kitchen garden. A short stroll away lies St Mary’s Church, renowned for its collection of 99 ancient yew trees and impressive Grade I-listed architecture. The historic town centre itself is a delight to explore, with its honey-stone buildings, the oldest Post Office in England, and even the country’s oldest bowling green.
For lovers of the outdoors, Painswick is a walker’s paradise. The town sits at the very heart of the Cotswold Way, making it an ideal base for scenic trails. A climb up to Painswick Beacon rewards you with breathtaking views stretching across to the Malvern Hills and, on clear days, even the Brecon Beacons. You can also pick up one of the Gateway Towns walking and cycling routes, designed to lead you through hidden valleys, rolling hills, and picture-perfect villages.
After exploring, take time to enjoy the town’s welcoming dining spots. The Painswick Hotel offers indulgent afternoon teas or drinks on its sunlit terrace, while The Woolpack Inn is perfect for hearty meals in a historic setting. Independent shops, artisan cafés, and small restaurants line the streets, waiting to be discovered.
Just beyond Painswick, the beauty continues. The nearby Slad Valley is famous for its connections to author Laurie Lee and is dotted with charming villages such as Slad, Sheepscombe, and Edge. Or venture a little further to Stroud, a vibrant market town brimming with independent shops, a lively arts scene, and one of the best farmers’ markets in the country.
