Out and About
Tucked close to the Devon border, the village of Stawley offers you the charm of rural countryside living with easy access to both Wellington and Wiveliscombe. From here, the dramatic Quantock Hills and the wild beauty of Exmoor National Park are just a short drive away, making it an ideal base for adventures in nature, culture, and local food and drink.
If you’re keen to get outdoors, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Exmoor National Park beckons with its sweeping moorland, wooded valleys, and endless walking routes, with highlights such as Dunkery Beacon – the highest point on Exmoor – and the nearby Quantock Hills, England’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Closer to home, the Grand Western Canal Country Park provides a peaceful spot for walking, cycling, or boating, while Culmstock Beacon rewards you with panoramic views over the rolling countryside. For something more tranquil, you might enjoy casting a line at West Pitt Farm Fishery or sipping local vintages at Wellhayes Vineyard, where visitors are welcome for tastings.
The area is also rich in history and heritage. Just outside Wellington, you’ll find Cothay Manor, a medieval gem surrounded by magical gardens, while Exmoor’s Tarr Steps offers the chance to walk across an ancient stone clapper bridge steeped in legend. Dunster Castle, perched high on a wooded hill, brings over 600 years of history to life with dramatic views and enchanting interiors. For a nostalgic day out, hop aboard the West Somerset Railway at Bishops Lydeard and journey through the countryside by steam train. Or head into nearby Taunton to discover the Museum of Somerset, a fascinating showcase of the region’s past.
Families will find plenty to keep everyone entertained. At Sheppy’s House of Cider in Taunton, one of Somerset’s oldest cider makers, you can take a tour, enjoy a farm walk, or simply relax over a hearty meal. Wimbleball Lake offers a wide range of watersports and outdoor activities, perfect for an active day out with children. Closer still, the Wellington Monument provides both a scenic walk and a chance to explore a landmark honouring the Duke of Wellington’s victory at Waterloo. And for a relaxed evening, The Globe Inn at nearby Appley is a welcoming country pub where you can enjoy local food and a friendly atmosphere.
